A Variety of Uses in the Heart of the City
On July 14, 2015, the Sacramento City Council approved the Sacramento Commons Project entitlements for master planning and redevelopment of a 10 acre site located in the heart of the City of Sacramento’s Central Business District just two blocks from the new Sacramento Kings Golden 1 Center Arena and directly adjacent to the most highly serviced light rail stop operated by the Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT). The Project consists of a multi-phased development including three high-rise residential towers with the potential for a hotel and specialty market, three mid-rise residential buildings, ground floor live/work units, up to approximately 75,000 square feet of commercial space, and substantial recreational amenities throughout the site. The Project also retains the existing Capitol Towers high-rise residential tower located on the project site. In total, the Project will include up to 1,470 residential units (up to a 1,061 unit increase over existing conditions on the project site) including both rental and for sale units.
At both the City Council hearing and earlier Planning and Design Commission hearing, representatives from the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG), Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD), and Sacramento RT testified in support of the Project due to its density, its proximity to jobs and public transit, and its associated air quality and transportation benefits. SACOG also explained that compact development projects with a variety of housing options, such as the Sacramento Commons Project, is “critical to Blueprint planning principles” and confirmed the Project is consistent with SACOG’s Metropolitan Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy (MTP/SCS) for 2035.
