Through his exceptional ability to gain the support of key stakeholders and staff at all levels, Nicholas Avdis, Of Counsel, has successfully advocated on behalf of business and property owners, developers and builders in the greater Sacramento area.
For the past ten years, Nick has specialized in land use and general real estate law. He has extensive knowledge of the impact of local and state proposed and existing laws on land development along with a proven ability to facilitate effective land use resolution, from initial land acquisition and local land development permit process through to project construction.
Nick has led multi-disciplinary project teams of consultants, agency representatives, landowners, architects and engineers in overcoming legal and procedural challenges from project conception to completion. He has successfully advocated for projects and legislative initiatives before multiple public boards and commissions throughout the Sacramento region, and has built solid relationships with local agency representatives. His expansive knowledge of administrative procedures results in the timely and accurate processing of land use entitlements.
By working collaboratively, developing and implementing creative, sound legal strategies, making recommendations and implementing plans that meet or exceed project goals, Nick is able to reduce expenses in both time and dollars.
Growing up on a ranch that his family has owned for close to 80 years shaped Nick’s career and his understanding of the issues and challenges faced by farmers and ranchers. His connection runs deep and is further enhanced by the fact that he owns a small scale, grass fed beef ranch.
Nick’s interest in land use law also dates back to his youth when he observed immigrant relatives struggling with legal issues related to property ownership. It was that scenario that motivated him to pursue a law career.
His community work is also reflective of his dedication to land use issues. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Reclamation District 1000, which provides flood protection and public safety to Natomas area residents, businesses, schools and agriculture and is a member of the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency and an alternate member of the Sacramento Transportation Authority. In addition, Nick serves on the Sacramento County Natomas Community Planning Advisory Council as its Chair. He is also the President of the Valley View Acres Community Association and Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Sacramento.
Nick received his law degree from the University of California, Davis in 2003 and also received his Bachelor of Arts from UC Davis in 2000. He has been recognized by California Lawyer magazine as a “Rising Star” for six consecutive years, beginning in 2009.
Prior to joining Thomas Law group, Nick was a corporate counsel for KT Development Corporation (2003-2004), followed by serving as an associate (2004-2007) and then Senior Associate (2007-2008) for Sandberg, Lo Duca & Aland, LLP and partner (2008-2013) with Lo Duca & Avdis, LLP.
